Short answer: with 4 hours in the city you can see the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the grounds of Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace and the Corniche. 5 hours adds Saadiyat Island (Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Abrahamic Family House). 6 hours adds the Heritage Village and the dates market. 7 hours reaches Yas Island and Ferrari World. 8 hours covers all the main stops with a meal break. Our private tours for those lengths cost $220 to $380 for one traveller, plus $10 per extra traveller, with pickup and drop-off at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).
Abu Dhabi is a good layover city because its best-known sight, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, is the closest major landmark to the airport. That means even a short tour can include something genuinely memorable. With more time, the city spreads out along the water to Saadiyat and Yas Islands. This guide walks through what fits into 4 to 8 hours outside the airport, then how to work out whether your layover is long enough.
How long does your layover need to be?
The hours below are tour time: from meeting your guide in arrivals to being dropped back at departures. Your layover also has to cover landing, passport control and customs, plus check-in and security for your next flight.
As a guide, allow about 3 hours of your layover for the airport, and keep the rest for the tour. A layover of about 5 hours fits our shortest 2-hour tour; a layover of 7 hours or more opens up the 4-hour tour. Your airline, your terminal and the time of day all make a difference, so send us your flight times before you book and we'll confirm what's safe.
| Tour length | Typical layover needed | Route | Price, 1 traveller | Each extra traveller |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 hours | about 7 hours or more | Essential Abu Dhabi | $220 | +$10 |
| 5 hours | about 8 hours or more | Discover Abu Dhabi | $260 | +$10 |
| 6 hours | about 9 hours or more | Culture & Coast | $300 | +$10 |
| 7 hours | about 10 hours or more | Abu Dhabi & Yas | $340 | +$10 |
| 8 hours | about 11 hours or more | Grand Abu Dhabi | $380 | +$10 |
Prices are the total for your private group: one vehicle, up to six travellers. Tax is added at checkout, and you see the exact total before you pay. Shorter layovers? Our 2- and 3-hour tours start at $140 and focus on the Grand Mosque.
4 hours: Essential Abu Dhabi
The 4-hour tour is the classic first look at the city.
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, about 30 minutes. One of the largest mosques in the world, built in white marble with gold details and huge chandeliers. Entry is free with an online reservation, and modest dress is required (see the tips below).
- Qasr Al Watan, about 20 minutes at the presidential palace grounds. Going inside needs a ticket, which isn't included.
- Emirates Palace, a pass-by of the landmark hotel.
- The Corniche, about 15 minutes on the waterfront with views of the city skyline.
If you only do one tour of Abu Dhabi, this is the one most first-time visitors are happy with: the mosque, a palace and the sea in one loop.
5 hours: add Saadiyat Island
The 5-hour tour adds Saadiyat Island, the city's cultural district:
- Louvre Abu Dhabi, about 15 minutes outside the museum. The architecture, especially the domed roof, is worth seeing even if you don't go in. Museum tickets aren't included.
- Abrahamic Family House, about 10 minutes. A mosque, a church and a synagogue stand side by side, a striking piece of modern architecture with a clear message.
This is the length we'd suggest if you're interested in architecture or want more than the classic sights.
6 hours: culture and the coast, at an easier pace
The 6-hour tour keeps everything above and adds two stops that show older Abu Dhabi:
- Emirates Heritage Village, about 20 minutes in a reconstructed traditional oasis village by the sea, a reminder of what life here looked like before the oil era.
- Abu Dhabi Dates Market, about 15 minutes to taste and buy local dates. They're an easy, packable gift to take home.
The extra time also means fewer rushed photo stops, which matters in the heat.
7 hours: Yas Island and Ferrari World
The 7-hour tour heads out to Yas Island, home of Ferrari World with its famous red roof. You get about 15 minutes for photos outside the park and around 20 minutes on Yas Island. Riding the rollercoasters isn't included in a layover tour; a theme park needs much more time than a layover allows.
This is a good choice for families and anyone who wants to see the city's newer leisure side as well as its landmarks.
8 hours: Grand Abu Dhabi
The 8-hour tour covers all the main stops, from the Grand Mosque to Yas Island, with time built in for a meal. If you have a long daytime layover and don't want to feel rushed, this is the comfortable option.
With 9 or 10 hours, you can go inside places like Qasr Al Watan or the Louvre (tickets extra), or take the whole route at an easy pace with time for lunch and shopping. See all the tour options.
Day or night?
The tour runs around your flight, day or night. Each has its advantages:
- Daytime is best for the Louvre, Qasr Al Watan and the Heritage Village, and for photos of the Corniche in bright light.
- Evening is when the Grand Mosque is lit up, and it's one of the most beautiful sights in the city. Visiting hours vary, so check them for your date, or ask us.
- Late night, many places are closed, but the city is quiet and the drive along the lit-up waterfront is still worth it. One of our Viator reviewers took a night tour and still rated it five stars, while noting that most places were closed.
Practical tips before you go
- Visa. You must be allowed to enter the UAE to join a tour. Many nationalities get a visa on arrival or can apply for a transit visa through their airline, but rules depend on your passport, so check yours before you book. Transit visa fees aren't included.
- Dress for the mosque. Clothing that covers arms and legs. Women also need a headscarf. The mosque may refuse entry for unsuitable clothing, so it's easiest to wear it from the start.
- What's included. Pickup and drop-off at AUH, a private air-conditioned vehicle for your group only, an English-speaking driver-guide, bottled water and a route planned around your flight times.
- What's not included. Entry tickets (such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan and Ferrari World), food and drinks, and visa fees.
- Families and accessibility. Infant seats are available on request, and the vehicle and main stops are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Tell us your needs when you book.
- Delays. If your inbound flight is late, tell us as soon as you can. The tour always ends in time for your onward flight.
