Abu Dhabi transit visa and Etihad stopover: can you leave AUH on a layover?

Updated 2026-10-28

In brief: you can leave Zayed International Airport (AUH) on a layover if your passport lets you enter the UAE. GCC citizens enter visa-free, some nationalities get a visa on arrival, and everyone else needs a visa arranged in advance, such as a 48- or 96-hour UAE transit visa. Flying Etihad with a longer connection? The Abu Dhabi Stopover can add one or two complimentary hotel nights to an eligible return ticket.

Rules change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm on the official pages linked below before you fly.

Step 1: Check whether you need a visa at all

The airport's visa, passports and customs page sets out three cases:

  • GCC citizens enter visa-free.
  • Some nationalities get a visa on arrival. Etihad keeps the current country list on its UAE visa information page.
  • Everyone else needs a visa arranged before travel. Etihad notes this also applies if you're transiting through Abu Dhabi and plan to leave the airport.

If you're staying airside, you don't need a UAE visa to change planes. You only need one to step outside.

Step 2: The UAE transit visa, if you need one

The UAE government's transit visa page says there are two types, 48 hours and 96 hours. They're single entry, can't be extended, and must be approved before you enter the UAE. They're sponsored by UAE-based airlines, so if you're flying Etihad through AUH, you apply with Etihad.

Etihad's visa page lists these details:

What you need, according to Etihad:

  • A completed application with a colour photo and a passport copy.
  • A passport valid for six months at the time of travel.
  • A confirmed ticket to Abu Dhabi and onward to a third destination.
  • If you'll be in the UAE more than 24 hours, a confirmed hotel reservation, or the Emirates ID and residence visa copy of the person you're staying with.

Timing: Etihad says visas take around four business days to process. Don't leave it to the week you fly.

Don't overstay. The UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) lists a fine of AED 50 for each day you stay after a visa expires.

Step 3: What the Etihad Abu Dhabi Stopover gives you

Etihad's Abu Dhabi Stopover page offers a complimentary stay of up to two nights in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain when you break a longer Etihad journey. Here's how it works, from that page and Etihad's published stopover terms:

  • Return ticket on Etihad, connecting in Abu Dhabi. The outbound and return flights must be on one ticket, and you can use the free stay once, going out or coming back.
  • Etihad-operated flights only. The terms say it isn't available for journeys to or from Oman.
  • Minimum 24-hour stopover. The free package covers 1 to 2 nights in a standard room at a selected 3- or 4-star hotel. Trips needing three or more nights don't qualify for the free package.
  • Room only. Breakfast and extras aren't included, and the hotel charges the AED 15 per room per night tourism fee directly.
  • Book the hotel at least 3 days before you arrive. You can add it when you book on etihad.com, or call Etihad afterwards. You'll get a voucher to show at check-in, with your Etihad boarding pass.
  • How you book the flight matters. The stopover page says flights booked through a travel agent aren't eligible, while the terms list a few approved partners in specific markets. If you use an agent, check eligibility first.
  • Getting to and from the hotel is up to you in Abu Dhabi. Etihad says Al Ain stopover bookings include shuttle transfers from the airport.
  • Blackout dates apply. The 2026 terms exclude 2 to 5 November, 2 to 6 December and 28 December to 3 January.
  • You still need to be able to enter the UAE. Etihad tells stopover guests to have a pre-arranged UAE visa or be eligible for a visa on arrival.

Etihad also said in September 2026 that eligible visitors on Etihad-operated flights get complimentary medical travel insurance for up to 15 days, on qualifying tickets through December 2026. Check the terms in Etihad's announcement before relying on it.

Step 4: Short layover or full stopover?

Your time in Abu DhabiWhat usually fits
Under about 5 hoursStay airside. Leaving the airport is too tight to be worth the risk.
About 5 to 10 hoursA private tour from the airport and back, if you can enter the UAE. No hotel needed.
Overnight, under 24 hoursA transit hotel or a city hotel you book yourself, plus a tour on the day.
24 to 48 hours on an eligible Etihad returnThe Etihad Abu Dhabi Stopover: free nights, then explore at your own pace.

As a rough guide, allow about 3 hours of the layover for the airport: getting off the plane, immigration, and getting back through security for your next flight. Our Abu Dhabi layover guide for 4 to 8 hours shows what each tour length covers, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque guide explains booking, hours and dress code for the city's most popular stop.

Seeing Abu Dhabi on a shorter layover

If your connection is a few hours rather than a few days and you can enter the UAE, a paid private layover tour can collect you at AUH and bring you back in time for your flight. Private tour totals (1 traveller): 2h $140 · 3h $180 · 4h $220 · 5h $260 · 6h $300 · 7h $340 · 8h $380 · 9h $420 · 10h $460 (+$10 per extra traveller; max 6). Default booking length is 4h = $220. Entrance fees and meals not included. See all prices or Book. Our private tours are not part of the free Etihad Abu Dhabi Stopover hotel package and are not affiliated with Etihad — Stopover (if you qualify) is booked only with Etihad.
